Talking to yourself is not a bad thing. We all have conversations going on in our heads all the time but the vocabulary used in these conversations should be kept in check.
If you were to speak to others as you speak to yourself, would they appreciate the words you use? If someone spoke to you the way you speak to yourself would you accept it?
When I first went through the process of ‘catching myself at it’ I was surprised. I would find myself using words like; can’t, stupid, idiot, silly. By themselves these words may not seem like harmful. Put them into a phrase such as ‘because you’re stupid’ or ‘why did you do that you idiot’ and you can see how the potential harm starts building up.
With all the attention that mental health has had in the news recently, more and more people are starting to understand how to take care of their own self-talk.
In my book The Path To Success we show you how easy it is to change your negative self-talk and make using positive words a habit. This will improve the quality of conversation you have with yourself. It also lifts your mood and raises self esteem. This in turn leads to better relationships and decision making.
You can make a start on this today. It’s easy. All you need to do is decide to improve your self-talk.
What type of conversation will you have with yourself today?
